Powers, Patricia A

Powers, Patricia A. slipped away peacefully and painlessly on Saturday, March 17, 2018. For 93 years my beautiful mother lived life on her terms—always fashionable and with a keen wit. She was full of love, humor, boundless energy, fierce loyalty to family and friends, adventurous entrepreneurial spirit, passion for travel, and straightforward opinions. You always knew where you stood with Patty. Far more often than not her thoughts and advice left one kicking themselves later for not listening more attentively to the lessons of someone who’d seen it all.
Born into the Italian baking business in Collinsville, IL, she was the youngest of five sisters and learned early, during the depression, the value of hard work. Her love of fashion took her to Chicago, New York, and back to St. Louis as a woman’s clothing buyer and later the owner of the Di’Leo shop in the Central West End. She owned a coffee shop in the Gas Light Square, several restaurants in St. Louis and Collinsville, and sold antiques and high-end furniture. She could do it all but her life’s work was her unwavering dedication to and love of family. If asked she would say that her proudest accomplishment and crowning achievement was becoming a mother.
My Mom gave me breath and she was always my fiercest protector, wisest mentor, strongest disciplinarian, biggest fan, and best friend. She kicked my tail when I deserved it; but her comforting touch, lively sense of humor, and bottomless plates of homemade pasta eased all my pains when I needed it. She reminded me every day that I was her heart, and she was mine.
She is survived by her only son, R.S. Drake Powers of St. Louis; his brother, Michael R. Powers of Monaco; his sisters Kate Powers of Monaco and Rainey Fogiel of Dallas; as well as their five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She is now free so that her lovely spirit can surround all her family and friends with warmth, comfort, love, and a watching eye. I love you Mom. A memorial mass will be held at Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis on Friday April 13th at 10:00am.
